Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will find ways to keep themselves entertained even if their owners aren’t involved enough with them. Macaws that aren’t socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set so that the macaw doesn’t feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They need at least 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.

Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those living near. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or near young children who might be scared by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once the sex of the birds is known and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita’s care

For years activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.

Lolita’s captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean, not a concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita’s retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O’Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita’s Diet

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to take a deep dive in the ocean and perhaps be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
